Bob Arum picks Canelo to beat Bivol on May 7

Via Sean Jones: Bob Arum backs Canelo Alvarez to defeat WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol next Saturday night, May 7, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Sean Jones sees this fight as one that Canelo, 31, will find difficult to win in rounds against the larger and more mobile Bivol. Canelo’s anemic work rate will put him in a position where he can’t win innings.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Canelo won’t win rounds. In his battle with Gennady Golovkin, he won rounds in both of their fights despite landing a shot or two.

It’s just that it will make the umpires and Canelo look bad if he wins a decision much of the boxing world sees him lose on May 7.

Assuming Canelo beats Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs), that’s in Arum’s favor as the wise Top Rated promoter wants to battle the Mexican star against the winner of a light heavyweight unification bout on June 18 between IBF/WBC Champion Artur Beterbiev vs WBO Champion Joe Smith.

Arum says he will invite Canelo to New York to watch the Beterbiev-Smith game next June at Madison Square Garden.

Whoever turns out to be the winner of the Beterbiev and Smith unification fight, Arum plans to take on Canelo in the first quarter of 2023 in May.

Before Canelo can face the winner of the 175 lb unification fight between Beterbiev & Smith, he must defeat Bivol on May 7 and Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17 and face whoever enters. December.

The boxers running in the fight against Canelo in December are these people: John Ryder, Craig Richards and Joshua Buatsi.

Canelo will likely be the softest of those three in Ryder, and he will deserve an easy battle if he successfully defeats Bivol and Golovkin without question.

“I think Canelo is really special, and Bivol is a really good fighter, but I will support Canelo in that fight,“Bob Arum said to Small Giant Boxing when asked about his views on next week’s match between Canelo Alvarez and Dmitry Bivol on May 7.

“Canelo is a fighter and has a great coach at Eddy Reynoso and there is so much for Bivol,“Arum continued. “But it’s not a hit for Bivol because Bivol is a capable lad with some good wins on his record,” Arum said.

Many boxing fans will disagree with Arum’s comments about Canelo having “too much for Bivol,“But it is understandable why he would say that. Again, it would be good for Arum if Canelo beat Bivol as it increases the chances of facing the winner Beterbiev vs. Smith next year in May 2023.

If Bivol does do some with Canelo, Arum can forget about the Mexican star fighting Beterbiev or Smith.

“My first thought was that although I have never promoted a match against Canelo, Canelo and [trainer] Eddy Reynoso, I consider myself good friends,” said Arum. “They are going to use my gym next week to start a fight with Bivol.

“So one thing is business, and the other is friendship. I will definitely invite both of them [Canelo and Reynoso] to New York to meet Joe Smith and Artur Betterbiev [on June 18th at Madison Square Garden].

“It’s really, really big, but Canelo has to take care of the business with Bivol first, and we have to see how the fight between Joe Smith and Beterbiev plays out,” Arum said when asked if Canelo and Beterbiev were is a great war.

“I know for a fact that Joe Smith and Beterbiev want to fight Canelo if they win their fight, whoever wins their fight. Why don’t they do? But again, that’s a long time.

“I think Canelo has an obligation to fight Golovkin after the battle with Bivol, so we are talking about May next year“Arum talks about the moment Canelo is likely to take on winner Beterbiev vs. Smith.
