Boat capsizes near Greenock: Search resumes in Scotland after tugboat sinks in the mouth of the River Clyde | UK News



A major rescue operation has resumed in Scotland after a tugboat – believed to have two people on board – capsized at the mouth of the River Clyde.

The ship capsized around 3:30 p.m. Friday, at the Firth of Clyde, near the Inverclyde town of Greenock.

A huge multi-agency rescue agency was launched, with policecoast guard and RNLI, all of which participated.

The Coast Guard stopped the search at 8 p.m. Friday, with police following shortly after.

The search for the two was resumed at 8 a.m. Saturday.

West Scotland MSP Neil Bibby tweeted: “Very disturbing news of the grievous crash off Greenock.

“My thoughts are with the crew, their families and the rescue team at this worrying time.”

A coast guard spokesman said: “HM Coastguard responded to reports of a ship capsizing off Custom House Quay in Greenock today, 24 February.

“It is believed that the ship had two crew members on board.

“Just before 3:30 p.m., coastguard teams from Helensburgh and Greenock, a lifeboat from Helensburgh RNLI and a coast guard helicopter from Prestwick were sent to assist and search the area. .

“Many ships on the Clyde in the vicinity of the incident also responded, including a Police Department vessel.

“The coast guard’s involvement in the surface search ended at 8pm.”

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Police were notified of a tug boat that capsized off Custom House Quay in Greenock at around 3.30pm on 24 February.

“Emergency services were involved, including HM Coastguard and RNLI.

“Officers, including the Scottish Police’s Diving and Marine Unit and Air Support Unit, have conducted searches in the area and these searches will continue into the morning of 25 February.

“Investigations are ongoing, with the support of partners, to establish the full circumstances.”
