BMW’s next-generation car assistant will be powered by Amazon’s Alexa

This visual is almost as exciting as BMW’s news of the upcoming Alexa integration.

Tons of new cars coming soon from the factory with Amazon Alexa Integration because, perhaps, some people like that for some reason. Now, according to an announcement made on Wednesday, BMW is going a step further.

Specifically, BMW will use Alexa to power the next-generation BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. So when you whine to your car because it’s cold or ask it to set a navigation destination and nothing happens or it tries to freeze you, you can now add Amazon to the list of companies blameworthy.

“Alexa technology will enable a more natural dialogue between the driver and the vehicle, so the driver can focus on the road. This will take the digital experience to a whole new level,” said Stephan Durach, Senior Vice President of Connectivity and Development Engineering at the BMW Group, in a statement.

Of course, the addition of Alexa as the backbone of an in-car digital assistant could raise privacy concerns for many users. Many people don’t use Alexa in their homes, so integrating it further into their cars loses its purpose. BMW and Amazon claim they will adhere to strict data privacy policies but did not specify what that means.

It’s also not entirely clear when this change will go into effect, but it looks like it will happen with the next generation of iDrive, though that’s just speculation on our part.
