M Hybrid V8 to start racing in 2023, initially only in the IMSA Sports Championship but later also in the FIA ​​World Endurance Championship from 2024. It will compete in the new GTP class in the SportsCar Championship, for both LMDh and LMH vehicles. The equivalent in the World Endurance Championship is Hypercar. The M Hybrid V8 uses a chassis sourced from Italy’s Dallara, one of four companies supplying the chassis for this category. The car will need a 2,270 lb minimum weigh-in and its powertrain, a hybrid setup that uses Revised 4.0 liter twin-turbo V-8 from a previous DTM racing program, can produce a maximum output of about 670 hp at any one time. The electrical component consists of a single engine coupled to the V-8, with a split clutch allowing the vehicle to drive solely on electric power, such as can be used in a tunnel.

BMW M will run its LMDh campaign with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing of America, under the BMW Team RLL banner and with RLL Racing co-owner Bobby Rahal as principal. The current plan is to do two cars in the SportsCar Championship.

The first race will be the 2023 24 Hours of Daytona in January next year. The race is the opening lap of the 2023 SportsCar Championship and the first round for the LMDh.

Acura, Alpine, Cadillacand Porsche also committed to LMDh, while ByKolles, Ferrari, Glickenhaus, Peugeotand Toyota are committed to LMH.
