BMW patent reveals yoke steering wheel for self-driving cars

Drawing from a patent filed by BMW car revealed that the brand is designing a yoke steering wheel for its future self-driving cars. The concept is a radical evolution of the yoke-style steering wheel introduced by Tesla with it Pattern S Plaid – it has a handle that can be rotated and folded when self-driving is on.

The patent drawings don’t say exactly what the device will look like, but the new steering wheel – known as ‘steering wheel’ in the filing – behaves like no other production car.

The hub is similar to a traditional steering wheel, but the similarities end there. Two spokes are attached to opposite sides of the hub, with clamps on each end for the rider to hold. The spokes are mounted using swivel joints that allow the handles to rotate and remain upright, regardless of the orientation of the center spindle.

The patent emphasizes that the system is designed for self-driving cars and that the spokes can be folded while in self-driving mode.

Under normal driving conditions, however, the steering wheel doesn’t seem suitable for a larger number of steering locks, as the design prevents the driver from passing it through his hand, as they would with a conventional steering wheel. This is a problem with Tesla’s yoke solution, but more so with BMW’s design, as the spokes and grips also rotate to stay upright regardless of steering angle.

The patent drawings show a driver turning a wheel 270 clockwise; It’s not clear if this is the system’s maximum revs, but it’s much less than a typical car’s revs if it is. This could mean that BMW is developing a variable-ratio steering system for its future models that uses the steering wheel, which would allow increased steering for relative steering wheel rotation. rarely moves at low speed.

If BMW’s steering wheel is designed for production, we won’t see it until the company releases its first fully autonomous vehicle, as government legislation allows. Currently, the UK allows level 2 automation, which allows advanced driver assistance systems to control steering, throttle and brakes in certain situations while the driver remains fully alert while driving. put your hand on the steering wheel.
