pearl (Storm Cat–Mariah’s Storm, by Rahy), the dam of the three Group 1 winners and the Decorated Knight (GB) stallion (Galileo {Ire}), passed away this week, Blue Diamond Stud of Imad Al Sagar announced on Tuesday. She is 17 years old.
“So sad to lose Pearling this week,” the stallion tweeted. “She was one of the first mares to join Blue Diamond and gave us a real star in Decorated Knights. She left a lasting legacy with us and we are so lucky to have her three daughters.”
Bred by Pacelco of Kentucky, she finished second in two Stateside starts, and was supplied by Highclere Stud during the December 2011 Tattersalls Mare Sale as a pony to Galileo. She brought in 1.3 million gns from Tony Nerses on behalf of Saleh Al Homaizi and Al Sagar, who were jointly running Blue Diamond Stud at the time. The pony she was holding was the Decorated Knight. Putting the ring back on the 2018 version of that sale was also for Galileo to dissolve their partnership, she bought $2.4 million for Blue Diamond Stud Farm UK, now run by Al Sagar only.
She also has an Ambrosia (GB) Award (Frankel {GB}), who went to WinStar for 1.3 million gns at Tattersalls in December of that year. In total, Pearling has produced seven ponies, with her latest pair being the 5-year-old mare Blue Diamond (Ire), the half-sister of Decoration Knight and Haute Couture (GB) (King {GB}), who arrived in 2021. The Blue Diamond was offered for sale at the December 2018 Tattersalls Sale and was purchased by Blue Diamond for 1.7 million gns.
The sister of six-time Group 1 and ‘Iron Horse’ Giant’s Causeway winners, who would go on to see success in the US, Pearling is also a brilliant producer You’resothrilling, a double group winner. The second has seven black category winners to her name, led by a Double Classic winner and a male Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).
