Blizzard ‘Decoupling’ PvP and PvE of Overwatch 2, PC Beta Announced in April

Blizzard has announced that it is “decoupling” the PvP and PvE experiences of Overwatch 2 in an effort to get PvP content into the hands of players faster.

This news comes from Blizzard, which announced the news today in a press release that also revealed the PC PvP closed beta will take place this April. While it’s closed, you can sign up to claim access to the beta on PlayOverwatch.comand if you’re lucky enough, you’ll be selected to participate in this PC beta at the end of next month.

“Overwatch is evolving,” reads a press release. “In our first step towards increased communication and consistent updates for our community, we are extremely excited to share information about our plans in the coming months. We’re changing our release strategy by separating Overwatch 2’s PvP and PvE experiences from each other to get new PvP content to your hands sooner, while we continue to work on PvE. ”

Blizzard has released a new video featuring game director Aaron Keller talking about the split, and you can watch it above. The studio has also revealed that Overwatch 2 PvP closed alpha testing will begin today in select regions. It will include Blizzard employees, Overwatch League experts, and “a select number of other teams to help us prepare for broader testing.”

And speaking of broader testing, the first PvP beta for the game will begin at the end of April for PC in all regions. Blizzard said that “this closed beta will include a larger group of testers, who we will ask for feedback on the game” and that the studio’s goal “at this stage is to test our new features, content and system before we move into stress testing servers with a wider player base in future beta tests. ”

Here’s what to expect in closed beta this AprilBlizzard says this is the most important Overwatch release since the first game came out:

  • New Damage Hero: Sojourn
  • New game mode: Push
  • Multiplayer 5v5
  • Hero Reworks: Orisa, Doomfist, Bastion and Sombra
  • 4 New Maps:
    • New escort map: Circuit Royal
    • Midtown: New Hybrid Royal
    • New Queen Street: New Push Map
    • Colosseo: New push map

“Players will be given access in stages, and we will add more and more players as we progress through the upcoming beta phases,” the press release reads. “We’ll also be sharing regular updates on what’s to come in this first beta in the weeks leading up to launch.”
