Video game development giant Epic Games, best known for its popular title ‘Fortnite’, has unveiled the first NFT game on the platform called ‘Blankos Block Party’ powered by Mythical Games. The mythical game first launched Blankos Block Party about two years ago with an open beta, and since then it has claimed that over a million players have engaged with the title. The title features a collectible digital vinyl toy set called ‘Blankos’. These Blankos are non-fungible tokens that can be bought, upgraded, appraised and sold within the game ecosystem.
While Blankos Block Party is a blockchain game with NFTs representing avatar designs and accessories that can be bought and sold on the game’s marketplace, Game of Mythology places no emphasis on the blockchain aspect of the game but rather the its interesting elements and ownership economy.
“We don’t beat our chests and say this is Web3 game and this is on the blockchain. We are unique that way. You don’t need to know what a wallet is. You don’t need to know what cryptocurrency is, you can literally play it,” said Mythical Games CEO John Linden told VentureBeat.
The development comes just a few days after the Gala Games previously announced that western-themed shooter Grit will be the first Web3 game on the platform, however, at the time of writing, that title is not yet available on the Epic Games store.
According to a DappRadar report in April, blockchain gaming activity grew 2,000 percent in Q1 year over year. But it still faces challenges when it comes to mass adoption.
Part of that comes from stores’ reluctance towards Web3 games. While Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has said that he open to the game Web3Competitor Valve banned games using blockchain technology last year on the Steam distribution platform.
