‘Black Panther’ sequel vying for best opening of 2022, helping ease theaters (NYSE:DIS)

A lasting box office hit is set to drop slightly over the weekend, with Marvel (NYSE:DIS) back to save the day (as it was several dozen times before).

After a few lackluster months, parted mainly by some success from DC opponents in the form of Black Adam (NASDAQ:WBD), by Marvel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (DIS) is set to give some huge numbers, possibly the best of the year.

The sequel grossed an impressive $28 million in just its Thursday preview, bringing it into mid-high Marvel territory; earlier in 2022, Doctor Strange in Madness’ Multiverse (DIS) grossed $36 million in previews the previous Thursday marks the best opening in 2022, which is $187 million.

Wakanda Forever’s predecessor, Black Panther, raked in $25 million in Thursday 2018 previews before opening up to $202 million (then the fifth-best opening sale of all time). That film went on to record the sixth-highest cumulative domestic gross of all time ($700.4 million), as well as a worldwide total of $1.35 billion, a Disney’s all-time resounding success.

That suggests some of the best numbers on the pandemic to come by the end of the week. The sequel will open without the first film’s lead actor, Chadwick Boseman, who passed away from cancer in 2020.

Wakanda Forever are also focusing on high-end format screens, such as cinemas such as IMAX (IMAX) turn attention to it at a cost Black Adam (WBD), set to lose the lead for three weeks. Black Adam led the way with $18.3 million last week, ahead of Crunchyroll’s (SONY) Movie One Piece: Red with $9.3 million; Tickets to Heaven (CMCSA), with $8.5 million; and horror hits Smile (PARA) (PARAA), with $4 million.

Rival studios have almost cleared the deck for Marvel; Note is a limited release of Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical drama Fabelmans (CMCSA), a light premiere at just four coastal cinemas before expanding at the end of the month.

Ready to register as exhibitors: Cinema Mark: AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC); Cineworld (OTCPK: CNNWQ); Cinemark (NYSE:CNK); (IMAX); Marcus (MCS); International reading (RDI); Cineplex (CGX: CA); National CineMedia (NCMI).
