Three months after walking out of the Congress with scathing remarks against the Gandhis, Jaiveer Shergill was appointed a spokesman by the BJP on Friday, as they announced new roles for a number of prominent leaders. transferred from the old party.
Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and former Punjab Parliament Speaker Sunil Jakhar have become members of the BJP National Executive Board.
The party also included UP minister Swatantra Dev Singh, former BJP leader Uttarakhand Madan Kaushik, former Parliament leader Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi, and former Punjab minister Manoranjan Kalia among the group.
In his scathing withdrawal from the Congress, Jaiveer Shergill criticized Gandhi’s followers, saying that the “vision of the party’s decision-makers was out of sync” with the aspirations of the youth and that the flattery was “eat congress like ‘termites'”.
He told reporters that all three Gandhis had refused to see him for more than a year, adding that he had “severed all ties” with the party. The 39-year-old lawyer is one of the youngest and most prominent speakers of Congress.
This is his third resignation in August after two veterans, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma, gave up party posts in their home states.
Amarinder Singh resigned from Parliament last November and formed a new party ahead of this year’s Punjab elections, before merging the party with the BJP earlier this year. Sunil Jakhar left the party in May.
Congress has lost a number of leaders while grappling with election failures and organizational drift over the past few years. An exodus begins in 2020 with the departure of Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is now Union Minister and UP Minister Jitin Prasada. This year, former Union Ministers Kapil Sibal, Ashwani Kumar and RPN Singh have left the party.
