The BJP on Friday stepped up its attack on the Aam Aadmi Party after the head of Gujarat Gopal Italia was found to have mocked the prime minister’s mother in a video and said the people of the state would pay the price if “abusive ” grandma.
An old video of Mr Italia surfaced on Thursday, in which he is said to have heard Prime Minister Modi’s mocking 100-year-old Hiraba Modi. Mr. Italia was also heard intending to use language to insult Prime Minister Modi, prompting strong condemnation from BJP leaders.
“If you think abusing the prime minister’s mother will make you politically famous in Gujarat then you are wrong. And because of that mistake, Gujarat and Gujaratis will cost you politically in the upcoming election,” the ministry said. Union chief Smriti Irani told reporters on Friday, attacking AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal.
She confirmed Mr Italia’s comments were made under the guidance of Arvind Kejriwal, saying that the Gujarat AAP leader had made some comments that were also “offensive” to Hindu society and temple women.
Ms Irani said it would be “completely unforgivable” if AAP leaders sought to abuse a 100-year-old woman who had nothing to do with politics.
“Her only crime is not that she got involved in politics but that she gave birth to Narendra Modi who is obstructing your political designs (Kejriwal),” the BJP leader said.
With Mr Italia claiming that the BJP is targeting him because he is from the Patidar community, Irani says he is hiding behind new excuses and this shows that AAP will play a community and gender role because its political goals.
“It’s not surprising that Arvind Kejriwal could fall to new lows. What they don’t realize is the respect that Gujarat and Gujratis have for women, especially mothers in our society.” , she said, while also declaring that the regional party will suffer political decline in the upcoming congressional polls there.
Ms. Irani alleges that the AAP leadership in the state has made all kinds of statements, including “slandering Hindu women and religious organizations”, to get political attention.
In another video, Mr Italia is said to have heard calls for women not to visit temples, alleging that religious sites are places of exploitation.
Ms Irani said that with Mr Kejriwal’s “blessing”, he had “maliciously attacked and abused” Modi’s mother.
