The woman killed was Gurpreet Kaur, 28, the wife of local BJP leader Gurtaj Bhullar. Five policemen from UP’s Moradabad were injured in the incident, which sparked a dispute between the police of the two BJP-ruled states.

The UP police team went to a village in Jaspur in Uttarakhand on Wednesday to arrest a criminal named Jaafar, believed to be from the mining mafia, who had a bounty of Rs 50,000 on his head.

During a chase that began near Moradabad, Jaafar crossed the border into Uttarakhand, and, according to police, took refuge at a farm owned by Mr. Bhullar.

When officers arrived, a clash broke out and shots were fired. Gurpreet Kaur is believed to have perished in the fire.

Two UP police officials were also shot.

After the death of the BJP leader’s wife, angry villagers allegedly took 4 policemen hostage and took their weapons. Two policemen are missing.

Senior Superintendent Shalabh Mathur, Moradabad Police, said: “The defendant is a wanted criminal and was awarded Rs 50,000. He escaped from there (Bharatpur village) of ANI news agency.

Uttarakhand police have registered a lawsuit against UP police for the murder of a woman, alleging gross negligence.

“UP Police didn’t notify any senior Uttarakhand police officer. They didn’t even notify the local police station. They didn’t have any orders, they were wearing civilian clothes, this is there. Is that how a raid is conducted? They came and started ‘opening fire inside the farm killing an innocent woman,’ senior Uttarakhand police officer Neelesh Anand said.

But Moradabad officer Hemant Kutiyal alleged that the Bhullars were trying to hide the crime. The BJP leader strongly denied it.

“There was no discord between the locals and the police, the police came and started shooting, we didn’t catch the police, we handed them over to the Uttarakhand police,” said Gurtaj Bhullar.

While five UP policemen are at the hospital, the criminal remains missing.
