Biodiversity and ecosystem protection highlighted on Mother Earth Day |

Nature is suffering. The oceans are filling with plastic and becoming more acidic; extreme heat, wildfires and floods have affected millions of people; and we are still facing COVID-19A worldwide health pandemic has implications for the health of our ecosystem.

We are destroying our own house – the only home we have, the common home we all share,” President Shahid said to an interactive dialogue about Harmony with Nature.

He encouraged the international community to take responsibility for its reckless behaviour, noting that science has shown that “our continued and careless encroachment on the world’s ecosystems” has caused harms biodiversity and endangers human health and well-being.

Turn green

Referring to this year’s theme “Harmony with Nature and Biodiversity: Eco-Economics and Earth-Centered Laws”, President Shahid called for a shift to green economies.

Let us embrace education, technology and science to help preserve a healthy planet for allincluding young people who will inherit this planet,” he stressed.

Senior UN official says international community needs to use tools and goals of Paris Agreement about climate change and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as blueprint for sustainable recovery from COVID-19.

Panel discussions

Also speaking during the opening segment were Bolivian President Luis Arce, and Teresa Ribera, Vice President and Minister of Ecological Transformation of Spain.

This was followed by an interactive dialogue with statements from United Nations Member States, observers, experts and others.

This includes two panels, the first entitled “Earth-Centered Law to Protect Biodiversity in Harmony with Nature”; and second, “Eco-economy to protect biodiversity in harmony with nature.”

Interactive dialogue is called for in GA resolution 75/220, “to discuss the relationship between harmony with nature and the protection of biological diversity, and to inspire citizens and society reconsider how they interact with the natural world in the context of sustainable development. ”

Climate changeMan-made changes to nature as well as crimes that disrupt biodiversity, such as deforestation, land use change, increased agricultural and livestock production, or trade Illegal wildlife is on the rise, which could accelerate the destruction of the planet.

This is the first Mother Earth Day celebrated in UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration. Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier our ecosystem, the healthier the planet and its people will be. Restoring our damaged ecosystems will help alleviate poverty, combat climate change and prevent mass extinctions. But we will only succeed if everyone contributes their part.

For this International Mother Earth Day, more than ever, the UN encourages us to remember that we need to move to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet.

This is why we must promote harmony with nature and the Earth to restore our world.
