Biden says “it matters” whether Russia controls Mariupol

The new aid brings the total US economic assistance to Ukraine to $1 billion in the nearly two months since the Russian invasion, the president said.

The $500 million grant could be used by the Ukrainian government “to stabilize their economy, support communities devastated by the Russian onslaught, and pay wages to brave workers who continue to continue to provide essential services to the people of Ukraine,” Biden said.

He also announced “United for Ukraine,” a new effort to assist Ukrainians trying to reach the United States amid the ongoing brutal invasion, with about two-thirds of Ukrainian children displaced.

“I am announcing a program, ‘Unity for Ukraine,’ a new program that allows Ukrainians seeking refuge to come directly from Europe to the United States. This new humanitarian parole program will complement the existing legal pathways available to Ukrainians, including immigrant visas and refugee processing,” said Biden.

He described it as “an emergency channel for safe legal migration from Europe to the United States for Ukrainians,” noting that such migrants must have a U.S. sponsor, including a family. or non-governmental organization.

“This program will be quick, streamlined, and ensure the United States honors its commitment to the Ukrainian people and doesn’t need to cross our southern border,” he said.

Mr. Biden said the new US actions were intended to send a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin as he continued his violent offensive into a third month.

“Our solidarity with our allies and partners and our solidarity with the Ukrainian people are sending an unmistakable message to Putin: He will never succeed in dominating the country. and occupied the whole of Ukraine. He won’t,” he said.
