President Biden on Thursday warned Americans that democracy was under attack from a faction of the Republican party led by former President Donald Trump, and called on Democrats, mainstream Republicans and independent party members “speak up, speak up, participate – vote, vote vote.”

In a rare primetime speech, Biden attacked his predecessor, saying “so much of what is happening in our country today is not normal.” The speech comes just two months before midterm congressional elections, where Democrats are fighting to keep their slim majority in the Senate and House.

Mr. Biden said Republicans were “dominated, driven, threatened” by Donald Trump and his supporters, and called it a “threat to this country.”

Biden said, speaking outside Independence National Historical Park in downtown Philadelphia.

The White House claims this is not a political speech, but Biden has made many political comments against Trump and his supporters. He called them “MAGA Republic” – a reference to the slogan ‘Make America Great Again’ used by the former president.

“Donald Trump and Republican MAGA represent an extremism that threatens the very foundation of our republic,” he said.

Biden is looking to capitalize on recent momentum, strategists say

Doug Sosnik, former adviser to President Bill Clinton.

“The real power of the president is to understand the use of bully podiums,” Sosnik said. “The better your standing with the American public, the more likely you are to have an impact on the speech.”

Ben Tulchin, a Democratic pollster, praised Biden and his team for changing their strategy and confronting Republicans more directly.

He said Biden was wise to establish more contrast between himself and Trump and the Republican party. “Every hero needs a villain,” says Tulchin. “And Donald Trump plays a very good villain.”

Republicans say Biden is divisive

Speaking ahead of the speech, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy called on Biden to apologize.

“President Biden has chosen to divide, demean, and disparage his fellow Americans – why? Simply because they disagree with his policies,” McCarthy said in a speech from Pennsylvania. . “That’s not leadership.”

Biden sought to make it clear that he was not criticizing all Republicans, calling on mainstream Republicans to reject that wing of their party.

“We are not helpless in the face of these threats. We are not the ones behind the ongoing assault on democracy,” he said. “There are more Americans, more Americans of all backgrounds and creeds who reject the radical MAGA ideology than there are those who accept it.”
