Bhagwant Mann In Gujarat, Massive Protest Outside Punjab Home Over Wages

Chandigarh:

A large protest is taking place outside the Sangrur home of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who is campaigning in Gujarat ahead of parliamentary elections in the western state. Farm workers and the union organizing the protest are clashing with police, who are using batons to control crowds.
Dramatic images from the website show protesters waving flags and chanting slogans being beaten by police.

The protesters are demanding that the state government increase their minimum daily wage to Rs 700 under MNREGA (National Rural Employment Guarantee Program) and implement a 5 marla land scheme.

The protest, announced earlier, had begun in the morning. The protesters, who had gathered at the Patiala Bypass, had begun marching towards the Minister’s house when they were stopped by police.

The farmers, who had organized a 19-day protest earlier, agreed to cancel it in October after the government accepted their request in writing.

Mr. Mann is in Gujarat, campaigning for parliamentary elections to begin on December 1. AAP has stated that the protests are being backed by the BJP.
