Best new PC games to play on Steam Deck right now – Dwarf Fortress, Victoria 3, etc – TouchArcade

As we move into 2023, it doesn’t seem like the pace of new game releases will slow down at all. I figured that the last few weeks of November and December might just have some of the most awaited games in January and February 2023. I was wrong, as I can’t remember having many games. which I care about when it’s released this close to the end of the year. A lot of games have been released on Steam with some titles being only available for PC. For this new Steam Deck feature, I wanted to highlight the best new PC-only games worth playing on the Steam Deck.

The games featured here are in no particular order and aren’t currently available on any console. Some of them are likely to arrive on consoles next year, but they’re only available on PC for now. This feature is more interesting than usual because a lot of games have been built to be played with keyboard and mouse. It brought me to the Steam Input rabbit hole and witnessed the amazing work that users have done to make these keyboard and mouse titles work well on the Steam Deck. This feature only includes recently released games or early access titles that received major updates this year. I will also mention the Steam Deck compatibility rating of each game from Valve.

The Best New PC-Only Games to Play on Steam Deck

Victoria 3

Victoria 3 is a grand strategy game designed to be played with a keyboard and mouse, but I had a lot of fun with it on the Steam Deck (and brought back the save to my laptop). It has no controller support, but the community layout solved my problems. The gameplay fits perfectly with the collectible and playable nature of the Steam Deck, and lately I’ve enjoyed playing it while traveling and while out for coffee. This is the first Victoria game I’ve played, so I’m not sure how it compares to previous games, but the tens of hours I’ve spent so far definitely makes me want to revisit previous games. . I also look forward to seeing the DLC when it releases in the future. Victoria 3 is one of the best surprises of the year, and it’s dangerously addictive on the Steam Deck. Victoria 3’s Steam Deck compatibility from Valve is playable.

Pharmacy

Potionnomics is a game I’ve been following for years whenever Xseed Games showcases it at events or has new information revealed on Twitter. It was finally released in October of this year and was a lovely surprise with its mix of different mechanics and great character design. The combination of deck building, dating simulation, and store management works surprisingly well with the added focus on max max boost. It needs a bit of a quality-of-life improvement with its look and feel, but Potionnomics remains one of the best PC exclusives I’ve played so far in 2022. Steam Deck compatibility by Potionomics from Valve Verified on Deck.

The case of Golden Idol

The Case of the Golden Idol is an amazingly creative and challenging mystery puzzle game from developer Color Gray Games and publisher Playstack. It gives you a lot of freedom in how you approach things and reminds me of why I love Lucas Pope’s Return of Obra Dinn. Just like some of the other games on this list, I regret not checking it out sooner. It also fits perfectly on the Steam Deck, but I hope it makes its way to iPads in the future. More people need to play this game and this is a rare experience with no accompaniment. I can’t wait to see what this developer does next. Case of the Golden Idol Steam Deck compatibility from Valve is playable.

Monochrome Mobius: Forgotten Right and Wrong

Monochrome Mobius: Forgotten Rights and False shouldn’t be included in this feature, but it’s only releasing on Steam outside of Japan. The Japanese release is on PS5, PS4, and Steam. Also, Monochrome Mobius: The Forgotten Right and Wrong is the latest release in the long-running Utawarerumono series, and it’s a JRPG compared to its predecessors being a visual novel with some tactical RPG battles. While it’s considered a prequel, I definitely enjoyed it a lot more having played the Utawarerumono trilogy before. Out of all the games on this list, it’s likely you’ve never heard of Monochrom Mobius. If you haven’t already, consider playing Utawarerumono because those stories and characters are amazing.

Crazy lie this way

Zeboyd Games’ Cosmic Star Heroine is one of my favorite indie RPGs ever. When the studio announced This Way Madness Lies, I didn’t even bother to watch any of the trailers or read about it. I bought it the moment it was was live on Steam and was blown away by how good it was. It feels like a mix of Sailor Moon and JRPG. For now, it’s PC-only and plays great on the Steam Deck. I liked Cosmic Star Heroine best on PS Vita and then Nintendo Switch, so it made sense to play This Way Madness Lies on mobile in the first place. This Way Madness Lies Steam Deck compatibility from Valve is playable.

Symphony of War: Nephilim Saga

This year has been great for tactical RPGs as Square Enix released both Triangle Strategy and the remake of Tactics Ogre: Reborn across platforms. A tactical RPG that more people need to play is Dancing Dragon Games and Freedom Games’ Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga. This 2D turn-based SRPG focuses on teams with a long campaign. While the story itself is a bit weak, the gameplay and customizability elevate it to an easy recommendation for those looking to dig deep into a great tactical RPG with tons of classes. Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga feels like a modern take on older console tactical RPGs in many ways. Symphony of War: Steam Deck Compatibility Nephilim Saga from Valve is playable.

Baldur Gate III

Having admire both Divinity Original Sin games across platforms, I’m a bit disappointed that Baldur’s Gate III was only released on PC via early access with no sign of a console version. While it may eventually arrive on consoles, Larian has announced that the PC version will hit 1.0 in August 2023. Until then, the early access build right now is an RPG. awesome and it plays surprisingly well on the Steam Deck. The only downside is the large installation size. If you’re okay with a little controller tweaking (there’s no official controller support at the moment), you’ll have a special time with Baldur’s Gate III on the Steam Deck. Although this game launched in early access before 2022, it has been updated for the year. Baldur’s Gate III’s Steam Deck from Valve is playable.

Dwarf Fortress

When Dwarf Fortress was announced to release on Steam, my Twitter timeline exploded with people celebrating. I wasn’t familiar with Dwarf Fortress, but decided it was time to experience it. With the release of Steam, I learned to play it slowly and was also impressed with the Steam Input capabilities. The community has some great layouts for Dwarf Fortress that have used both trackpads on the Steam Deck. Dwarf Fortress itself looks like something I’ll be spending dozens of hours on in the coming weeks. The only problem right now is the lack of a cloud save feature to bring your progress to your PC. Hope that will be sorted soon. Until then, Dwarf Fortress continues to amaze me. Dwarf Fortress has not been tested by Valve for Steam Deck compatibility yet, but it was perfectly playable in my testing.

Modify ASTLIBRA

ASTLIBRA Revision was released in October and I didn’t know it existed until a few weeks ago. A few of my friends suddenly started posting about it and told me I would love it. I decided to take this chance and I regret not replaying it in October. ASTLIBRA Revision is possibly one of the best 2D action RPG I have ever played. The demo available on Steam gives you a taste of the great combat, but I was impressed with how good the story was. I had a sound problem when running ASTLIBRA Revision on the Steam Deck, but I solved it easily by changing one of the options in the game. Right now, ASTLIBRA Revision is overpriced for what it offers and how good it is. I hope many people play it. I’m looking forward to revisiting it when it’s likely to hit consoles. Right now, it’s only for PC. ASTLIBRA Revision’s Steam Deck compatibility from Valve is playable.

Honorary Knight II: Sovereign

Knights of Honor II: Sovereign was the first game in the series I played. I especially want to play this game now as I have been a huge fan of Total War games for a while and recently got into Crusader Kings III. Knights of Honor II: Sovereign is like a good, accessible piece that combines aspects of each series. Being completely new to Knights of Honor, it also does an excellent job with the tutorial and has great music. I used the community layout to play this on the Steam Deck, and aside from the interface size, I liked the amount of time spent with it. Knights of Honor II: Sovereign hasn’t been tested yet, but it works fine on the Steam Deck except the interface is too small.

This is our last Steam Deck feature of the year ahead of the Game of the Year coverage we’re working on. I also have some Deck reviews on Steam soon, including Need for Speed Unbound, so keep an eye out for those.
