Best natural sleep aid (2024), tested and reviewed
Lush shower/tub sets for $8-$40: I’ve tested many Lush products for sleep — they have a range of Sleepy products for showering, bathing and getting ready before bed. Like water jets and dust, shower gelbath bomb (muslin wrap and in cube), massage barAnd body lotion All have a top note of rich, soothing lavender. (I especially like Lush’s Sleepy scents because they don’t have that artificial, overly sweet lavender scent and are balanced with other delicate essential oil scents like tonka bean and chamomile). I really like it massage barcut in a grooved style that makes the bar feel like it’s gently massaged when rubbed on the skin. The bar itself smells like lavender essential oil and also contains chamomile and magnesium to promote healthy sleep. It leaves my skin covered in a waxy, greasy layer of moisture. Lavender scent fragrant water made with oat milk and cocoa butter, and infused with essential oils like almond, jojoba and lavender. Due to the oil content, the lotion feels a bit greasy on the skin but feels like a creamy body butter.
MoonBrew hot cocoa for $43: Like something made from mushrooms Alice chocolate on this list, MoonBrew Hot Cocoa uses a blend of superfoods like reishi mushrooms to slowly nurture your body’s natural sleep cycle, instead of supplements like melatonin that help with insomnia right away. ie. In addition to lingzhi, cocoa also has other familiar heavy drowsiness-inducing substances, such as L-theanine; magnesium mixture; and chamomile, lavender and zinc to promote relaxation and deeper sleep. It’s vegan, sugar- and gluten-free, and can be added to cold or hot water or milk. The cocoa was pretty good, but definitely had a more natural flavor and crunchier texture than the super sweet hot cocoa you’d find from a big name like Nestle (I think that’s mostly due to the reishi). I like it best when combined with warm oat milk for a dessert drink before bed. As mentioned, this is a slow-burning medication designed for long-term use, so I didn’t feel sleepy right away, but I did sleep all night after drinking and woke up without drowsiness. . I still like our other mixed drinks, Sombetter but this is a more effective sleep aid than a cup of herbal tea.
Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Extra for $5: Sleepytime Extra tea is a variation of the classic Sleepytime tea, which has been a household name in commercial teas for over 50 years. Sleepytime Extra tea is Celestial Seasonings’ classic blend of chamomile and mint, with soothing herbs such as lemongrass, hawthorn and tilia flowers. There’s also valerian root, which has previously been used as an all-natural supplement to help with insomnia and anxiety (although this claim has not been tested by the FDA). The tea has a pleasant light mint flavor with a hint of citrus. However, I’m not sure if it actually helps me stay awake – I think just making a warm cup of tea automatically makes you feel better and more sleepy. This doesn’t make me sleepy right away but it helps me relax before bed and just looking at the bear sleeping on the box makes me sleepy.
Numi Sweet Sleep Tea for $10: This delicious organic herbal tea uses familiar natural ingredients said to promote relaxation, with an herbal blend of chamomile, lavender, lemon balm leaves and licorice root. There’s also valerian root, which has previously been used as an all-natural supplement to help treat insomnia and anxiety (although this claim has not been tested by the FDA). Passionflower and hops (in the same family as the hops in beer) cause drowsiness. The tea has a mild, pleasant herbal flavor, with a bit of citrus flavor from lemon oil and a very faint anise-like flavor from licorice root. This didn’t make me instantly sleepy like others on this list, but it was helpful for winding down before bed—this wonderful cup of warm tea gives a cozy feeling.
Emergen-Zzzz Night Sleep Aid for $14: Emergen-Zzzz Nighttime Sleep Aid is a gentler version of the popular Emergen-C Vitamin C supplement. Emergen-Zzzz has melatonin to help promote sleepiness, along with vitamin C and antioxidants like zinc and vitamin D to support the immune system. (Melatonin is generally considered safe for pregnant women, but consulting with a doctor is recommended.) You stir the powder into a cup of water and it fizzes until dissolved. The Berry flavor tastes very artificial and is not my favorite flavor. The product says it takes about 30 minutes to be effective and contains 3 milligrams of melatonin. I feel more relaxed and a little more sleepy after taking this medication, but it’s not as strong as some of the others on this list. My problem is that it doesn’t seem to make me sleepy because I wake up several times during the night. However, I think this will help the average person without major sleep problems fall asleep faster.
Olly Sleep gummies for $20: Olly is a super trendy brand whose gummy supplements constantly go viral on social networks like TikTok and sell out quickly. These are delicious: blackberries have a mint flavor and they contain 3 milligrams of melatonin; L-theanine, which helps reduce anxiety and promote healthy sleep cycles; and botanicals such as chamomile, passionflower and lemon balm extracts. (Melatonin is generally considered safe for pregnant women, but consulting with a doctor is recommended.) The first time I took these gummies, I felt the effects and fell asleep easily. I woke up around 2 a.m., took two more pills, and finally went back to bed. The next night, after taking two pills, I no longer felt sleepy and doubled the dose to four gummies (6 milligrams) and fell asleep after about an hour but woke up in the middle of the night and took more. . Every time I took more, I felt sleepier, so it worked, but with so many people (both online and offline) criticizing these OLLY sleep gummies, I was expecting more than that. For someone like me who has a lot of trouble sleeping, they didn’t help me sleep as effectively as some of the other products on this list.
