Best dash cam apps 2022

Dash cams are dropping in price fast, but you probably already have one in your pocket to use for free. Your smartphone can perform all kinds of tasks and with the help of an app it can also become a fully functioning dash cam.

As with a dedicated device, the best apps will be able to record footage as you drive, marking video with GPS speed and location data. They can even detect problems using the phone’s internal sensors and will automatically save the files. If you don’t want to force your regular smartphone to do dashcam duty, you can use an older model or even a tablet that’s currently sitting in a drawer to collect. dust.

Besides being cheaper than buying a dedicated camcorder, using a phone also means that any footage can be shared instantly with no download required. So which smartphone app gives the best view of the road? We downloaded eight to find out.

How did we test them?

All of the apps we reviewed were loaded on the Apple iPhone 12, which was securely mounted in a bracket that attached to the windshield of our test car. We then drove in various conditions to check the clarity of the footage.

We also look at memory used, power consumption, and whether the camera is still functional when other functions, such as phone calls or music apps, are active. We looked at the ease of use and downloading the footage. All apps are free for the basic versions, so we’ve factored in the cost of the upgrade.

None of these apps are as convenient as a dedicated dash cam, but they’re useful if you just need to capture the occasional dash. For maximum feature count and best usability, we like the Ultimate Dash Cam app. It takes up some of your phone’s memory, so Navmii AI and Polycam are worthwhile alternatives if you don’t need all the functionality.

  • 1. Ultimate Dash Cam
  • 2. Navimii AI
  • 3. Polycam

Ultimate Dash Cam

  • Price: Free of charge
  • Rating: 5 stars

We don’t have high hopes for this application, as it is not the best of design and seems to be an add-on for smartphone users who have purchased a wireless charger of the Fiora brand. The text on the menu is also very small and the time to start recording is announced by an almost humorous artificial voice.

But once you’ve put on your reading glasses to find out what’s going on, it works really well and has all the features you need, including time stamps and GPS. There’s even the option to flip to the ‘selfie’ camera to capture what’s going on in or behind the vehicle.

Navmii AI

  • Price: Free of charge
  • Rating: 4 stars

The simple Navmii app is easy to use and offers video capture up to 4032×3024, which is the highest here by some margin. It also has a G-force sensor to ensure that footage is covered during an incident.

The ‘AI’ part of the name is because the app is said to use artificial intelligence to scan the road ahead and read road signs. In our experience, the feature doesn’t work well and no GPS location data is added to the footage. But in all other respects, Navmii impresses – and it’s also free, with no ads.

  • Price: Free of charge
  • Rating: 4 stars

We like the look of Polycam and the simplicity of its menus. This makes it easy to set up and choose to record at 1080p. Footage can be stored in the cloud or downloaded to your device. We were also impressed by the two camera settings, allowing you to choose between a wide-angle view or a narrower zoom.

While it doesn’t have the GPS stamp and sensor features, the flip side to this is that this app takes up less than half the space of your phone’s memory than the other apps here and also uses less more energy.

AR Road

  • Price: Free of charge
  • Rating: 4 stars

Our previous winner is still a useful app, especially since it’s free and also ad-free. The interface is easy to use and looks good, while the files are all encrypted with time and location. But instead of just using GPS coordinates, Road AR uses Google Maps to show the road you’re driving while recording a video.

There’s even a road sign recognition function, though this is a bit hit and miss. It loses here because the video quality is beaten by its rivals and it uses a lot of battery power to run.

Sygic car navigation

  • Price: £26.49 (12 months)
  • Rating: 3.5 stars

We’ve put this Sygic app to the test for navigation, speed camera placement, and now dash cam, because the same program will do all three – and more – for the price of a subscription. annual is £26.49. We found other functions not good enough to challenge the best dedicated apps, especially when considering the negligible cost.

But dash cams are actually quite competitive, offering up to 1080p footage, a 5 to 15 minute recording loop, and the ability to take phone calls without interruption. But you can get similar functions elsewhere for much less.

CarCamera DVR

  • Price: Free / £2.49
  • Rating: 3 stars

There’s nothing wrong with the basic filming done by this app. It’s very simple to set up, will record at up to 1080p and 60fps on loops, which can range from 5 to 30 minutes in length. The footage is also stamped with GPS coordinates and time.

However, the app keeps interrupting your Bluetooth if the car is connected to the phone, notifying that there is a call, which makes it very angry to use. There are also display ads on the screen, but paying £2.49 removes them and allows for unlimited video output and recording.

Smart Dash Cam Pro

  • Price: Free / £8.99 per year
  • Rating: 2.5 stars

The app looks a bit outdated and amateurish compared to some of its rivals here. Using the phone’s sensors, it has the most comprehensive detection of possible problems to start recording. It also has GPS location data logged into the footage.

There are other downsides besides cluttered-looking menus and on-screen formatting: maximum video quality is 720K resolution at 60fps, which costs £8.99 per year to remove. remove the ads and the app sometimes spends a long time calibrating the sensors and potentially misses driving problems.
