A lifelong thrifty enthusiast, Yusay developed a talent for finding high-end wallets at a fraction of their retail value from a young age. She amassed her own collection over the years, but never thought she could monetize her skills – until her fiancé suggested she start a business. it.

In January 2021, Yusay took the leap, spending $15,000 on luxury purses she plans to resell on sites like Poshmark and Depop. She also posted a video on TikTok about negotiating prices with customers, which went viral: Yusay says she gained 10,000 followers almost instantly. The video now has nearly three million views.

After six months of growing interest, Yusay created a Shopify website for FashioNica. By the end of the year, she had made $300,000 from side work — enough to convince her to leave her $82,000 annual salary as digital marketing brand manager for Pieology. Yusay says drops can sell out within two minutes — and getting to that point takes almost a week of preparation.

“You’d think it would be easier to start working full-time, instead of having two jobs. But no, I’m too hard on myself,” Yusay said. “If I wasn’t dedicated, this business wouldn’t be where it is today.”

On a typical Monday, Yusay decides which bags will be included in the upcoming sale. She spends hours photographing them for her Shopify website and social media accounts. On Tuesdays, she posts photos and writes product descriptions.

Wednesdays are spent preparing for the sale and marketing of bags on Instagram Live. Yusay spends Thursdays at thrift stores and with her salespeople, looking for unique bags. Fridays are dedicated to shipping labels and managing her Instagram inbox.

In March, Yusay hired her mother and sister to help her with the transportation – giving her some time back on Saturdays. But she said she has no plans to use the extra time to rest.

Yusay said: “I thought, if I hire my mom and sister, and have them deliver to me, I’ll have a good day. “One day could mean I could add five, maybe even 10 bags to my inventory for the next drop.”

Selling her way in a cropped industry

The used luxury goods market is worth an estimated $33 billion by 2021, based on management consulting firm Bain & Company. A well-known luxury resale vendor, The RealReal, reported nearly 1.5 billion dollars in 2021 sales.

Yusay’s plan to stay relevant in such a large cutting industry: Keep pushing and use his trained eye to find wallets that stand out from the crowd. She says she’s looking for bags that have stood the test of time: Some pieces in her inventory are up to 30 years old.
