Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway flooded a few days after its opening; CHOOSE reaction
Just days after it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway was flooded following pre-monsoon rains on Saturday. The highway was flooded, causing commuters to wade through, leading to traffic congestion. Flooding near a tunnel near Sangabasavana Doddi between Ramanagara and Bidadi led to chaos as vehicles there got stuck in traffic.
Following the situation, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) took immediate measures to address the issue. In a series of tweets, NHAI announced that heavy rainfall led to flooding below the animal underpass as villagers blocked the drainage. “NHAI has taken immediate measures to resolve the drainage problem on the Bengaluru – Mysuru Expressway,” the tweet read.
The autonomous government agency further informed that “the villagers of Madapura tried to create a shortcut to their fields by blocking the culvert with earth to make a private passage, resulting in the road being flooded due to congestion”. Villagers have been removed and a drainage pipe is being provided to solve the problem NHAI also shared pictures of the embankment being removed to unclog the drain.
Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway consisting of 10 lanes, 118 km long has been developed at a total cost of approx $8,480 cores. It has reduced the travel time between Bengaluru and Mysuru from about three hours to about 75 minutes. Developed by NHAI, the Expressway will have 4 railway overpasses, 9 large bridges, 40 small bridges and 89 underpasses and overpasses.
The expressway begins at the NICE entrance in Bengaluru and ends at the ring road junction in Mysuru. It is designed to achieve speeds between 110 and 120 km/h while the expected speed limit is between 100 km/h and 120 km/h.
