Bengal govt to undertake health check-up of all bridges in state | India News


KOLKATA: The West Bengal government has decided to conduct a “health check” of all 2,109 bridges in the state, following the collapse of a nearly 100-year-old suspension bridge in Gujarat that killed more than 130 people, one elderly person. official said.
State Minister of Public Works Pulak Roy, in a meeting with senior officials and engineers, instructed them to check the condition of the bridges and submit a report with the necessary observations by the end of November. , he said.
Roy directed engineers to take immediate measures “if the survey finds problems at any of the bridges,” the official said.
At the meeting, a decision was made to repair the Coronation Bridge at Siliguri at the earliest, and Birendra Sasmal Setu across Kangsabati, the official said.
Work required for repair Santragachi Bridgewill also begin November 10, he said.
“Two new bridges will be built on the Kangsabati and Shilabati rivers,” the official added.
The minister, when contacted, told PTI, “After seeing what happened in Gujarat, we decided to conduct a health check on all the bridges in the state. We cannot afford to lose this opportunity. .”
