Columnists love metaphors. They can be a neat way to demystify or liven up a subject that would otherwise be confusing or boring.
However, metaphors need to be developed sparingly, because they are like a little girl with slightly curly hair: when they are good they are very, very good, but when they are bad they are terrible.
