Ben Foakes revealed his relief at scoring a century of Second Test that helped put England in control in day two of the Second Test against South Africa.
Goalkeeper top scorer for the hosts in their first half at Old Trafford going 113 games unbeaten, sharing a sixth score of 173 with captain Ben Stokes (103) and helping them reach a claimed 415-9 father when responding to Proteas’ score out of 151.
This is Foakes’ first Test since making his 107th appearance on his debut against Sri Lanka in Galle four years ago and the 29-year-old is naturally delighted to be starring in a home test.

“It was a bit of a relief and I was delighted to receive a hundred tests,” said Foakes Sports sky. “I had a bit of a wait and I realized how hard they were to come, so I thought I celebrated this a little bit more.
“It’s obviously a great opportunity to play for England and you want to contribute as much as you can. When you go through it in such a short time it makes it a little bit more special.
“The whole journey makes you really appreciate it. Having to wait and work hard for it, days like that are amazing.”
It hasn’t been smooth sailing for Foakes since appearing on the Test scene in 2018, with a slump in form and injuries meaning it was something of an international career that didn’t begin for him. with him.
As a result, hitting the turn of the century milestone again after all of that makes this even more special for right-handers than it was at launch.
“Fairy tales, when they come out, don’t get much better, but you almost never know what’s going to happen,” says Foakes.
“Get my first ton, that’s what you’re meant to do, but you have no difficulty behind.
“While I think with all the trials and tribulations I’ve been through this makes a little more sense.”
Foakes has been full of praise for the guidance and support of captain Stokes and England Test head coach Brendon McCullum since they took charge of the team.
He believes England are in a great position to create their home advantage as South Africa went on to go 23-0 on Tuesday, after 241 runs.
“They’re too clear about what they expect of you,” says Foakes. “They don’t put too much pressure on you, they let you go and do it your way.
“They let you play freely, they are very supportive and the message is always clear, which is really helpful.
“Obviously it wasn’t easy and they were [South Africa] have a great bowling attack. It’s tough outside, and the partnerships have clearly put us in an advantageous position in the game.
“Hopefully we can do the job tomorrow and the next day.”
