Before and After – Laundry Room Makeup

I believe that tedious tasks can be made more enjoyable if they take place in a beautiful environment, and I took this into account in designing our new laundry room. The laundry area at #JungalowByTheMountain is relatively spacious and functionally perfect but completely lacking in personality and emotion – making laundry just that – a chore. I wanted to introduce a large amount of color and pattern into the space so that the laundry room could feel like a place I might actually want to be in, say, a like a boutique hotel for dirty clothes. Hehe.

The laundry room is a great place to enjoy fun and color. Like a dressing room, it’s an enclosed area that doesn’t really need to “companion” with the surrounding spaces, so there’s a perfect opportunity to have fun and get a little wild. I chose to install this peel and stick wallpaper because i want something patterned and dark background to match back to washing machine and dryer. (To help us calculate how much wallpaper we need, we used the very handy Wallpaper Calculator from The Home Depot app). The overall vibe I wanted to bring to the space was one of magic and mystery.
On the floor, we then installed a cement hexagonal brick in Sage from Tile Zia. We used a very fine grout and the grout color “River Rock” because I wanted the grout to stand out less. We styled it with a Gemstone Tapestry from my collection with Loloi Rugs.

I chose Behr’s Cajun Red and Terracotta Clay for the paint colors, because I wanted to bring warmth to the space. We used two colors to give the space a little more dynamism. For completeness, we swapped out the old cabinet hardware for something more modern in black and gold to match the wallpaper.

Since the wallpaper we used was peeling and sticky, I decided to also cover the hideous balustrade (we kept it for safety reasons) and it has now disappeared in the wallpaper pattern. Right.
Now I can get lost in the wallpaper pattern and warm tones of the walls and ceilings and dream of having my laundry done in Florence, Istanbul or Antigua (just a few places I don’t mind doing the laundry!)
