Bangladesh: At least 16 dead and 150 injured after huge fire causes multiple blasts at container depot | World News

At least 16 people have died and more than 150 injured after a massive fire swept through a container depot in Bangladesh.

The fire caused multiple explosions when it broke out on Saturday night at a container facility in the southeastern town of Sitakunda, about 25 kilometers from Chittagong, a port city.

The explosions rocked the vicinity, shattering the windows of nearby houses.

Firefighters – at least one of them injured – struggled to bring the blaze under control and were still working to put it out Sunday morning, officials said.

Several of the injured, including the police, were in critical condition and had to be hospitalized.

Civil surgeon Chittagong Mohammed Elias appealed to all local doctors to help deal with the situation, and called for urgent blood donations.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear, but officials believe it may have started in a container of hydrogen peroxide and spread rapidly from there.
