Bachelet deplores military coup in Burkina Faso |

OHCHR called for a swift return to constitutional order and called for the military to immediately release President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré and other senior officials detained in Monday’s coup.

During the visit, OHCHR observed growing frustration and impatience with the deteriorating security situation in the country, with increasingly fierce attacks by armed groups and others. across the Sahel, and the Government’s response.

In the face of enormous security threats and humanitarian challenges, OHCHR Spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani, told reporters in Geneva, it is more important than ever to ensure the rule of law, constitutional order and international rights obligations are respected.

“It is important that the democratic space is effectively defended, ensuring that citizens are able to express their grievances and aspirations, and engage in meaningful dialogue,” she said. towards the resolution of many domestic crises”.

This latest coup in West Africa comes amid a “multifaceted crisis”, according to OHCHR’s Shamdasani – a crisis that includes “climate change affecting the ability of people to carry out their daily tasks”. herders and livestock and the conflict that erupts as a result of it, to the attacks by violent extremist groups against the local population, as well as the deteriorating humanitarian situation”.

OHCHR estimates that three million people are food insecure in the country.

“Unfortunately in the region, we have terrorist groups, we have threats to international peace and security,” he said. “My appeal is for the militaries of these countries to assume the professional role of the military, defending their countries and re-establishing democratic institutions.”

When asked about the apparent high level of support witnessed by the people on the streets of the capital Ouagadougou. Mr. Guterres noted that public celebrations are common:

“It is easy to mediate them, but the values of democracy do not depend on public opinion at one time or another,” he said. Democratic societies are a value that must be preserved. Military coups are unacceptable in the 21st century.”
