Ayr Gold Cup: Summerghand turns back the years to make Danny Tudhope the first Scottish to lift it in more than 50 years | Racing news

Summerghand proved there’s no substitute for experience as the eight-year-old regularly pops up in late fashion to win the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup.

Commanche Falls looked poised to add the prestigious six-hair handicap to the Stewardess Cup he won in July, but he was turned down in dying strides when Scotland’s Danny Tudhope crept in dispute on the old David O’Meara-‘s eight-year-old evergreen boat.

This is the second time this season that the 12/1 winner has turned down Commanche Falls, with Summerghand taking into account Michael Dods’ five years old when the pair clashed in York last month.

The first two home grounds have had more than 90 head-to-head encounters between them during their respective careers and it was the winner’s 15th win in his 71st appearance.

O’Meara won his second Ayr Gold Cup to add to Louis The Pious’ win in 2014 and he told ITV Racing: “He’s been with me a long time and he’s a legend old phone right?

“He ran here a few good times and hit the woodwork a bit. He’s an absolute legend.

“Liam Heard drives him out every day and I don’t really gallop with him. Like so many of these good sprinters, they don’t have to work a lot. He runs quite often and take care of yourself.

“He loves the game and it’s been a great ride for Danny, I think they say it’s been over 50 years since a Scottish driver won this race.”

Royal Champion finally made his mark in Pattern company with an impressive performance to land Virgin Bet Doonside Cup Bets at Ayr.

Exposure to leaders during the 10-Fur-Listed event, Monday 9/4 favorite went on a menacing tour when Jack Mitchell asked Shamardal’s son to go ahead with two feather clippers from home . The race quickly ended like a competition and he went home five and a half minutes away from flamboyant runner-up Euchen Glen.

Always appreciated by coach Roger Varian, the four-year-old won for the second time this year after breaking into the disability company at Epsom on Oaks Day. The bookies were impressed, splitting the winners in half to 33/1 on the Champion Bet.

He said: “I’m very pleased because I’ve always loved that horse. It runs well in better races and always gives us the feeling of a good horse at home. I don’t know what comes next, but I’m looking enthusiastically with him going forward.”

Varian – with terrible form of the day, complete 34,000/1 set of seven hours on three cards – soon fell into the victor’s siege again when Lord Dusky took Virgin Bet Ayr Silver Cup Handicap in clear style to give both the handler and Mitchell a double north of the border.

The four-year-old once threatened to hit a major sprint handicap this summer, heading and going clear in the final to score three games at 14/1.

There is a shock in Virgin Bet Firth Of Clyde Fillies’ when Richard Fahey won Group Three for the second time in three years with a 20/1 . chance Barefoot Angel.

Paul Mulrennan’s mount is a far cry from George Boughey’s Belief, with 6/4 Queen Me preferring 3/4 of the length back to 1/3.
