Writer and director James Cameron isn’t worried about the possibility that Avatar: The Way of Water will flop at the box office. Cameron told “disruptors and protesters” Diversity that Water’s Way is good enough for him, so he hopes audiences will enjoy it, too.
“That it will fall face down?” Cameron said. “I’m not worried about it. I don’t think anything an artist in life should be decided by trolls and naysayers. You just have to go where you think is right. physical.”
In a sense, Cameron said, he made The Way of Water for himself—and that was good enough for Cameron, no matter how commercially successful the film was. “My preference is blue-collar and generic. They’re not esoteric, my personal taste. If I like my movies, I know other people will like mine. In the end it was. very simple,” he said.
2009’s Avatar was the highest-grossing film in history, so The Way of Water has huge shoes to fill. It remains to be seen whether the sequel can match or surpass the box office take of the original, but early box office tracking estimates paint a positive picture. The way of water is expected to make $170 million or more in the US alone by the first weekendwould be a significant increase from the $77 million that the original Avatar made in the US during its 2009 opening weekend.
Cameron has said The Way of Water needs to make about $1 billion to be profitable. He also said The aqueduct was a very bad business decision.
The Way of Water had its premiere in London this week and the first reaction to the film has been overwhelmingly positive. Those who have seen the movie call it “beyond” the first film and “spectacular” in terms of visuals.
