In Canada, a pigeon was caught smuggling drugs into a prison by wearing a baggy “like a little backpack.”
Authorities had to ‘push’ the drug smuggling bird
A strange situation occurred in late December at the Pacific Institute in British Columbia, CBC News report. While outside the prison yard, officers noticed a pigeon that appeared to be carrying a small package.
In the end, John Randle – the regional president of the Canadian Coalition of Corrections Officials – could only describe the incident as “kind of a curve”.
“To my knowledge, it is strapped to it in a similar fashion to a small backpack.”
Authorities quickly attempted to intercept the bird before it could transport its illegal cargo, and eventually they had to “plug” the pigeon in.
“They had to corner it. You can imagine what that would be like trying to catch a pigeon.”
They were eventually able to capture the animal, obtain the drugs, and release the bird.

About 30 grams of crystal meth were found on the pigeon, which Randle described as a “fairly substantial” amount. He also said that finding a drug-smuggling bird “is definitely scary” as it “causes a lot of problems”.
“It’s scary the fact that meth was found on the bird, because that causes so many problems.”
Randle also noted that he had never heard of a similar case in his 13 years at the institute.
Crashes act as ‘Fact Check’ to stay alert
Since delivery pigeons are a thing of the past, Randle took the situation as a lesson to stay alert, because you never know what’s going on with the smugglers.
“It was a bit of a reality check for us that the creativity people would use to try and smuggle drugs and other contraband into the organization was multifaceted.”
He added, “We’ve focused a lot on stopping the drones…Now we have to look at it again, I guess pigeons.”
