Aussies stoned James Mathison for saying Ash Barty and Nine ‘wine is honored’

Former Australian Idol presenter James Mathison appeared to have called Channel Nine and Ash Barty for ‘drunk’ following Barty’s Australian Open win on Saturday.

But the Aussies jumped to Barty’s defense after being tipped slightly against the 25-year-old tennis superstar.

One Facebook user wrote: ‘Crawl back into your hole, James. ‘She’s an adult who’s gone to great lengths to win a Grand Slam.’

The commenter added: ‘If it were Gatorade, you would complain about the sugar intake.’

Others agreed, with one reviewer writing: ‘Leave the poor girl alone…if she wants a beer after trying to win then let her.’

However, the former TV presenter Mathison defended herself on Twitter, writing: ‘This is not an attack on Ash, who I love and who is an incredible role model.’

‘Channel Nine makes beer for her. This is about our liquefaction of alcohol and how it permeates everything. ‘

Mathison previously criticized Nine for ‘drinking glorification’ after Barty encouraged the jury to enjoy a beer with her live on air following her Australian Open win on Saturday night.

He tweeted that ‘the addiction to alcohol in this country is so normalized that we can’t even celebrate success without drinking on live TV’.

Barty encouraged the commentary team, which includes Casey Dellacqua and Alicia Molik, to have a Corona with her following her win over Danielle Collins of America.

“Our celebration and infatuation with alcohol in this country is so normalized that we cannot even celebrate our success without drinking on live television,” Mathison wrote.

‘Strange. Imagine if this happened in Canada and the broadcaster lifted their new champion? ‘

Mathison’s controversial tweet has caused mixed reactions.

“It’s annoying to watch,” agreed one, while another said it was “incredibly jarring.”

A third joked that Channel Nine was ‘still classy’, and one viewer said it was ‘weird and unnecessary’.

However, Mathison faced some backlash when one reviewer replied: ‘I don’t look or feel awkward, it’s a celebration anyway!!’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Channel Nine for comment.

In September, it was reported that Mathison was currently working at an Amazon distribution warehouse after stepping away from the limelight.
