A threat to lower the Indian flag and replace it with a banner for Khalistan in Pragati Maidan, Delhi, the venue for the September G20 summit, is being investigated by police, officials said on Saturday. .
Police said they opened an investigation after receiving a tip from someone who had received a recording from an unknown number two days ago.
The audio clip talks about the massive crackdown in Punjab in search of radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh.
The audio message said Amritpal Singh’s supporters would “take over” Pragati Maidan and bring down the Indian flag. It also abused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Police have filed a First Information Report, or FIR, which includes allegations of attempting to riot and affecting law and order. The recording was received by a passenger flying to Delhi Airport.
Police say they are trying to track down the source of the audio amid efforts to apprehend Amritpal Singh, who has been on the run since last week.
They also said they had stepped up security at Pragati Maidan and other sensitive locations in the city.
Pragati Maidan is a major convention and exhibition center in New Delhi which hosts many national and international events. The G20 summit bringing together leaders of 20 major economies is expected to be one of the biggest diplomatic events hosted by India this year.
The statement by the Delhi Police came a day after they said they had opened an investigation into a protest this week at the High Commission in London, where protesters carrying Khalistan banners lowered the Indian flag. from the first floor balcony of the building on Sunday to denounce the persecution against Amritpal Singh.
