MANILA, Philippines — La Salle and Ateneo clinched their first win after knocking out separate opponents in Wednesday’s UAAP Season 85 men’s volleyball tournament at Philsports Arena.

Noel Kampton and Billie Anima lift La Salle to the victory pole after wiping out the University of the Philippines, 25-21, 25-20, 25-19.

Kampton shot 13 points, including the kills that pushed the Green Spikers out of the Fighting Maroons in the third set. Anima scored four blocks to finish with 12 points, as setter Paul Serrano made an excellent 21 sets.

“From the last game, we saw what we were lacking. We didn’t show our performance from pre-UST tuning and rehearsal. We cannot use restlessness as an excuse. We’re still adjusting,” La Salle coach Arnold Laniog in Filipino, recovering from an opening day loss to the University of Santo Tomas.

UP drops to 0-2 with Angelo Lagando is the only bright spot with 11 points, while Louis Gamban is limited to just 9 points on the clip 8 out of 29 points.

Meanwhile, Ateneo survived the University of the East, 25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 22-25, 15-10, to enter the winning column.

Abai Llenos, Ken Batas and Matthew Salarzon lead the Blue Eagles with 15 points each, while Jet Gopion contributed 12 points from 10 attacks and two saves.

Ateneo drew UE and La Salle with an identical 1-1 scoreline.

“Of course, we are very happy that we got our first win. But in the third and fourth sets, we had flaws that I think we have to work through to get into the season,” said Ateneo coach Timmy Sto. Thomas said. “But I’m still glad we were able to win the game.”

The Red Warriors failed to maintain momentum from opening day as Ken Culabat led the team with 20 points. JP Mangahis added 18 points.
