At the World Women’s Forum, the UN Deputy Secretary-General calls for action on gender equality.
Held on August 22-23 with the theme Towards a green futureThe forum focuses on promoting Sustainable Development Goals (Sustainable Development Goals), especially those that emphasize gender equality.
Speaking on Thursday, Deputy Secretary General Amina J. Mohammed stressed the urgency of accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, as the deadline is less than six years away.
She stressed that women’s leadership was essential for better community services and effective action on climate change but admitted that “time is not on our side”.
“While we recognize the urgency and the progress that has been made, we find ourselves very far from the finish line”, said Ms. Mohammed. “At this rate, that mission will be passed on to future generations,” she continued.
Supporting Women’s Leadership
In her opening remarks, Ms Mohammed outlined action plans to advance equality, starting with supporting women in leadership in environmental and climate action.
She noted that women’s lives are “inextricably linked” to natural resources, which play a key role in food security. She stressed the need to support women environmental rights defenders, those working in agriculture and others in similar roles, while also addressing the triple planetary crisis involving climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss.
“Strengthening global commitments to gender equality and women’s empowerment across all areas of environmental action must also be a common theme across our multilateral cooperation,” she said.
Ms. Mohammed also called for stronger support in increasing educational opportunities for girls and eliminating gender-based violence.
“The rights of women and girls must be protected,” she said.We must shape a world where they can achieve self-determination and live free from fear.“ .
Prioritize women’s rights
As world leaders prepare for the upcoming event Summit of the Future in September and the 2025 review of Beijing+30 Review – Global assessment on gender and gender equality – Ms. Mohammed stressed the need to mainstream gender equality and women’s empowerment into all aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals.
“We need policies that prioritize women’s rights, especially young, indigenous and rural womenand fully embrace their knowledge and expertise,” she said.
As Ms. Mohammed continues to promote empowerment and support for women’s rights, she has called for Remembering women and girls in conflict zones like Afghanistan, Gaza and Sudan, countries that have been left behind.
“Let us maintain this momentum to shine a light on the burdens, challenges and brutalities they face,” she said.
Ms Mohammed called for the world to be shaped in a way where girls and women can freely pursue their dreams, contribute to society and live in peace.
“Together, united, I believe we can make this vision a reality.“Mrs. Mohammed said.
Meetings and visits
On her last day In Mongolia, the Deputy Secretary-General met with the country’s Prime Minister, Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai.
After the closing ceremony of the World Women’s Forum, she visited a service center for survivors of gender-based violence run by the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. United Nations Population Fund.
Ms Mohammed expressed gratitude for the dedication, commitment and tireless efforts of service providers, as well as their support against such violence.
She also visited a herding family in their traditional home to learn about their livelihoods and the impact of climate change and modernization on their nomadic lifestyle.
