At home with Johnson Hartig in Los Angeles

“It was Marrakech meeting Nantucket, England, France – everything I love in a home,” explains Johnson Hartig, the design force behind the Libertine fashion label, of the new home in Los Angeles, which is located in Los Angeles. affectionately named Basket Case, after one of his countless collections. Join me and Susanna in visiting the magical world of Johnson’s wonderful abode.

In less talented hands, Johnson’s unbridled approach to decor, can be as blocky as his various sources of inspiration. But make no mistake, Johnson can have many and varied interests, but they are profound. He’s very serious about his art history references because of his disrespectful approach to layering, including lampshades decorated with floral images Johnson cut out from Jackson & Perkins’ botanical catalog, as you may remember from our visit to his former home.

While Johnson is well-traveled, some of his destinations are indirect. For example, you would never know from his vast collection of dioramas on board that he never set foot on the shores of Nantucket.

But some vignettes are inspired by memories of beloved distant experiences. “I wanted the house to feel as eerie as when I was in a boutique hotel in Marrakech and I thought why can’t I feel that way every day of my life.” The fireplace in his living room below takes you there.

His living room is also inspired by Piero Castellini Baldissera’s famous home, Casa degli Atellani, in Milan. And just as the l’oeil troupe there evokes a winter garden, so Johnson’s living room is an updated version with Los Angeles foliage creeping in.

Johnson’s amazing resourcefulness and obsessive research drive all of his creative efforts to create a unique cross-pollination of DIY ideas and ingenuity. So thank you Johnson – we continue to be endlessly inspired by your creative and imaginative talent!!

And a big thank you to the video sponsor Schumacher. Johnson’s first home textile collection, several of the above, is just as dynamic and carefree as his Libertine fashion line. And just as his house is a collection of global design influences, so is his collection.

From ikats, above, to bold cement tiles to whimsical tigers and magical dragons, Johnson has combined his penchant for bold colors, maximum combinations and ornate decor with talent. art of precious fabric house to create a collection resounding joy!

As Johnson explained to Schumacher of his sometimes surprising influences, “My velvet-cut luxury Dazzle for Schumacher is named for British and American warships camouflaged with motifs World War I geometry, as well as for my favorite OMD album from 1981. It’s a bit of French Moderne combined with American quilts”. Be sure to stay tuned for his upcoming second collection with Schumacher. It’s definitely original – just like Johnson!
