A popular pastime for many is to look at some current state of affairs and wave one hand with malice, mockingly declaring that “this is why we cannot have good things.” pretty”. Of course, Ford had two early years for Chevy, and there was a moment in the first decade of this century when Chevy just threw his metaphorical hands and abandoned the Camaro altogether for a number of years.

However, having spent a few individual years there, the Camaro had more sales than Ford’s horses. Here 1982 Camaro Z28 comes from one of the years when Chevy’s horse won the crown. That year, Chevy moved 189,747 Camaros into enthusiast garages while Ford managed only 130,418 Mustangs.
The reason behind the leap over the competition is obvious when you look at this car. 1982 was the first model year of the newly redesigned third-generation Camaro, and the model was well received by the motoring press and mullet-wearers everywhere. Okay, that last bit is a cheap shot, but any article written about the Camaro should have at least one reference to the mullet. That’s the law.
This generation of Camaro was the first to feature a hatchback body, the first to offer a fuel-injected engine, and the first to have a four-cylinder option.
Luckily, this is a Z28, and that package isn’t supplied with four Iron Puke pots. Instead, this car uses a V8 305 engine equipped with 4BBL. In this model year, 5.0-liter manages 145 hp. A “Cross Fire Injection” version of the engine is available as an option, delivering 165 horses, but that can be a nightmare to maintain so it might be worth dropping 20 horses here.
That engine is mated to a three-speed TH200 automatic transmission and direct-rear single-axle drive in a traditional Camaro style.
While a carbureted V8 might be the standard fare for the Z28, this car seems to have checked a lot of other options boxes. According to the ad, it features an updated Lear Siegler bucket seat, a favorable tailgate, a t-shirt, and — get this — an AM/FM/8-track stereo. Who knew that 8-track was still a thing in 1982?
According to the ad, the car is in excellent condition with only 75,000 miles on the clock. The exterior looks in great shape and the seller offers that it may have been restored at some point in the past. The factory wheels have no curb marks, but there are signs of evidence from previous balance weight installations. All trim and badges appear intact and the CarFax report provided by the seller shows no history of accidents. The header, it seems, is also clean.
The interior is also very nice with two-tone fabric seats and one of the heaviest accents the dashboard has ever had. Another unique feature of the instrument panel is the odd double-hand speedometer that reads MPH on one side and km/h on the other. It’s almost astonishing that tons of Torx head bolts with no function are peeking over the dash.
As I noted, the car was originally a birthday present for the seller’s wife, but she decided on something else so now it’s ready to pick up. Maybe it will be a great gift for another person? To do so, someone would need to make a claim of $13,500 or something close to that since the seller threw in an OBO for good measure. What do you think, is this clean Camaro a bargain for that money?
