Aston Martin Vantage and DBX return as F1 safety cars in 2022

Aston Martin confirmed that its presence on the Formula 1 grid in 2022 will go beyond competing through its team by continuing to provide safety and medical vehicles for use at selected rounds of championship this season.

In a similar deal to last season, the 12-day race weekend will see Aston’s Vantage coupe and DBX SUV take on duties such as official safety and medical vehicles respectively. They will begin their campaigns at the third race of the season: the Australian Grand Prix, returning after two seasons due to COVID-19 related postponement.

As was the case with last season, both cars received extensive modifications on the road versions to fulfill their on-road role. Both feature unique liveries, lighting systems and radio communications hardware, while the Vantage also incorporates access to the FIA Marshalling system. The DBX medical vehicle has been modified with unique storage solutions for safety equipment, including defibrillators.

Last year’s Vantage safety car provided inspiration for a more efficient road car Vantage: the Vantage F1 version. Power increased by 25 hp over the regular Vantage with a modified version of the Mercedes’ 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine, while receiving unique air and frame components.

An F1 Edition of the DBX is unlikely to follow, though, as the brand has just revealed a high-performance version of the SUV called DBX707. This, like the Vantage F1 Edition, has more power output than the regular DBX, leaping from 542bhp to 697bhp along with a tweaked chassis and more aggressive exterior styling.

With 23 races planned for the 2022 season, this year’s proposed F1 calendar is the longest championship in history. With Aston set to take part in 12 of those 23 races, it is yet to be confirmed whether Mercedes will return to providing safety and medical vehicles for another 11 Grand Prix weekend this season.

The German marque has a track record of providing official racing cars in Formula 1 and last season shared duties with Aston Martin, supplying the AMG GT Coupe for safety car duties and the firm’s AMG C 63 Estate. medical vehicle. However, both models will be replaced by new-generation vehicles by the end of 2022.
