“As exciting as winning a race,” Steve Cauthen said of Keeneland’s September Score

Steve Cauthen sat in the shade of Barn 42 at the Four Star Sales shipment Tuesday afternoon, not to remember his glory days as a Hall of Fame jockey, but in celebration quiet remembrance after selling one of the top birds of the day at the Keeneland September sale.

The pony, a flashy son of Sharp Azteca She’s Roughin It (Forest Camp), sold for $250,000 to Jerry Namy and Garry Simms.

“This is as exciting as winning a race,” Cauthen declared. “When you get something good and people like it enough to fight for it, that’s great.”

Cauthen has been involved in the breeding side of the industry since he was a horseman, when he owned several mares with his father on the ranch in Walton, Kentucky. After retiring in 1992, Sports Illustrated Player of the Year plays golf for a while, but gets bored after a few years. So he decided to go out and find a few more brood rabbits to get more involved as a breeder.

Today, Cauthen has eight mares at his Dreamfields ranch in Kentucky. Most broodmares are owned in cooperation with various friends. They focus on breeding for sale, but have also raced several home varieties over the years.

“We did pretty well,” Cauthen said. “We have bred some beautiful horses. We bred a beautiful pony named Pegasus Wind (Fusaichi Pegasus) that ran in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile 2006.”

Cauthen picked She’s Roughin It, the dam of its most coveted success, at Keeneland’s November 2007 Sale for $80,000. Forest Camp’s daughter was involved in a pair of bets as a minor and won once as a sophomore for Steve Asmussen before landing with Cauthen.

She’s Roughin The first pony, The Truth and KG (The Call for Success), won over $200,000 and was placed in #3. Since then, she has produced five more winners including the Francesco Appeal, another of the children who are staked in the Success Appeal.

Cauthen notes: “She has a lot of good ponies. “They are all very beautiful and the great thing is that her last three ponies are the best ponies she has.”

Apart from this Sharp Azteca colt, the mare also has a juvenile by the same stallion named TT’s Women, who placed fourth in the launch earlier this month as well as a weaned by Cloud Computing.

Cauthen was first attracted by the Three Chimney sire Sharp Azteca when students who win first prize leave school. Doug Cauthen, a member of the advisory board at Three Chimneys, encouraged his brother to visit the new stallion. Now a prominent young male god, Sharp Azteca currently leading his class in terms of first crop by the winners.

Sharp Azteca was a big, handsome stallion,” said Cauthen. “He is an outstanding individual and has done a lot on the track, so I am delighted to be involved and now I have the right to breed him. I think given the fact that he’s got the MSW Tyler Tribe, GSP Honed and SW Sharp Aza Tack, his horses will be in top races and that’s what gives people confidence in saying that This horse could be a top stallion. “

Cauthen’s colt is the first Sharp Azteca yearn to go through the ring this year at Keeneland in September, with nearly a dozen more to follow during the week.

Cauthen said that from the beginning he had high hopes for his hybrid. The young man spent his early days on Cauthen’s farm before preparing to sell with Renee Dailey.

Cauthen said: ‘This pony has been looking great since the day it was born. “He’s always been a good type of individual and he’s constantly growing and improving. A long time ago I was hoping to hit $200,000 with him, so this is a bit better than I expected, but of course this is a crazy good market. It’s unbelievably strong and when you get to this point in the sale there are still some good horses but few really better ones, so you hope [the buyers] They all fight for them in the end.”

Cauthen is looking forward to seeing one of his other aspiring kids make it through the ring over the weekend. His cloud computer is out Dialed mare Brilliant Dial sold as Hips 3381 with Fours Star Sales on Thursday. Until then, he will celebrate today’s achievement.

“The most expensive watch I ever sold was $425,000,” he said. “My mares are very good but they are not first graders so for me this is great.”
