As BJP Leader Khushbu Sundar’s Old Tweet On PM Goes Viral, Her Defence

When BJP Leader Khushbu Sundar's old Tweet about the Prime Minister went viral, her defense

Ms. Sundar has said Modi’s meaning should be changed to corruption.

New Delhi:

BJP leader Khushbu Sundar is under fire for a 2018 tweet over a comment that led to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi being sentenced to two years in prison and removed from Parliament. Member of Parliament at the time Ms. Sundar said Modi’s meaning should be changed to corruption. “Modi is everywhere, but what is this? Modi’s last name is related to corruption,” she wrote on Twitter.

“Yahan #Modi wahan #Modi jahan dekho #Modi..lekin yeh kya?? Har #Modi ke aage #bhrashtachaar surname laga hua hai..toh baat ko no samjho..#Modi mutlab #bhrashtachaar..change the meaning of #Modi for corruption..more suitable..#Nirav #Lalit #Namo = corruption..,” she posted in Hindi.

Khushbu Sundar said Congress was ‘desperate’ to release her old tweets. “The Congress party going through an old tweet from me shows how desperate they are,” she told PTI news agency.

“I’m not ashamed of the ‘Modi’ tweet that was posted when I joined the Congress party. At that time I just followed the leader and spoke the language of the party,” she added.

Ms. Sundar, also an actress and a member of the National Commission on Women (NCW), joined the BJP in 2020 after leaving Congress.

Rahul Gandhi, the top face of Congress, was on Thursday convicted by a court in Gujarat, Prime Minister Modi’s hometown, in a defamation case. He was sentenced to two years in prison and as a result, he was disqualified from his parliamentary status the next day. He has yet to appeal the ruling in a higher court.

Congress supporters shared screenshots of the tweet on social media, asking if Gujarat Minister Purnesh Modi, who filed a lawsuit against Rahul Gandhi, would file a lawsuit against Khushbu Sundar.

The incident stemmed from Mr Gandhi’s alleged remarks at a 2019 election rally that referred to Prime Minister Modi as a criminal. “Why do thieves all have the common last name Modi,” he said at Karnataka’s Kolar, which led to numerous defamation lawsuits being filed against him in various states.
