Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today demanded the death penalty for five men accused of dragging a 20-year-old woman for kilometers after her motorbike was hit by their vehicle.
Her body was later found naked on the street with a broken back and leg in Kanjhawala, Delhi.
Calling the incident “rare among rarity”, the prime minister said the perpetrators should be punished most severely. “What happened to the woman is shameful. The perpetrators should be severely punished. They should be hanged,” he said.
“This is one of the rarest crimes. I don’t know where society is going,” Mr. Kejriwal said.
The 20-year-old woman died on the morning of the Lunar New Year after her scooter was hit by the defendant’s vehicle and she was dragged for more than an hour.
A witness told police that the car driver dragged the girl’s body, which was caught in the wheel, for about 18 to 20 kilometers.
The vehicle – a Maruti Suzuki Baleno – was tracked last night, and five occupants were arrested leaving their homes.
“The police arrested the defendant based on the license plate number. The defendant said that their car had an accident with a scooter but they did not know that she was dragged along with their vehicle for several kilometers. “, an official said.
Delhi Deputy Governor VK Saxena tweeted that he was “shocked by the perpetrator’s terrible insensitivity” and was monitoring the incident.
“Even if all possible support/help and more, the victim’s family will be guaranteed, I urge everyone not to resort to opportunistic scavenging. Let’s work together towards a society society is more responsible and sensitive,” he wrote in another tweet.

The victim was a resident of Aman Vihar. She is survived by her mother and brothers. She is the oldest. Her father died a few years ago.
Rekha, the woman’s mother, accused the men of sexually assaulting her. “Her clothes couldn’t be completely ripped off. Her whole body was naked when they found her. I want a full investigation and justice,” she said.
