Burning, blocking roads in Kolkata after 7-year-old girl was found dead in a sack

A police jeep was set on fire and road and rail traffic was affected as protesters took to the streets

Kolkata:

A police jeep was set on fire and road and rail traffic was affected as protesters in Kolkata took to the streets to protest the death of a seven-year-old girl who went missing yesterday morning.

Police said the girl’s body was found in a sack at an apartment not far from her home in Tiljala, south of Kolkata. Police arrested her neighbor and the body was sent for an autopsy. Police say they are trying to determine a motive.

The protesters allege that the police have delayed the search for the missing girl and demand strict action against those involved. Dramatic images show a burned police car on a prominent city overpass. Several other police vehicles were damaged by protesters last night.

The PTI news agency quoted a police officer as saying three people, including a woman, had been detained for alleged involvement in the vandalism.

Protesters blocked several roads in Tiljala this morning to demand the release of detainees. They also blocked the arterial road, the Metropolitan East Side Bypass and the train tracks at the southern Sealdah station. Riot control personnel had to be deployed to disperse the protesters and restore road and rail traffic.

According to some reports, some policemen were stoned as they tried to disperse protesters.

Police officers said they were contacting protesters and monitoring the situation.
