Arsenal Women’s 4 – 0 Women’s Tottenham

Vivianne Miedema’s brace gave Arsenal a stunning 4-0 win over Tottenham in the North London derby, breaking their WSL attendance record.

47,367 fans gathered at Emirates to watch the Gunners wipe out their local rivals, breaking the previous record of 38,262 when Arsenal and Spurs played at Tottenham Hotspur in November 2019.

Arsenal were sure their supporters had gone away happy as well as Beth Mead had given the hosts the lead within five minutes. Her initial shot was blocked, but she got it back immediately before swooping past Becky Spencer. It was Mead’s third goal in the opening two games of the WSL as she continued her fine form from Euro 2022.

The Gunners also had a chance in Mead’s fifth-minute strike. The winger also had a chance to be saved from Lia Walti’s superb cross and, after the Gunners took the lead, Kate McCabe shot over the bar.

Team News

  • Arsenal made a change in the opening goal in the WSL when Steph Cately came on for Stina Blackstenius. The Swedish forward was also one of the players to be rotated following the 2-2 draw with Ajax in a Champions League qualifier in midweek, with Noelle Maritz and Lina Hurtig also coming on from the bench.
  • Spurs have made three changes from last weekend. Celin Bizet Ildhusoy made her first start, making it to group XI along with Kyah Simon and So-Hyun Cho. Rosella Ayane, Angharad James and Asmita Ale have been dropped from the typical lineup.

Arsenal captain Kim Little had some areas of record crowds to celebrate Arsenal’s second in half an hour. However, her decisive finish into the far corner only found the net as the Gunners continued to press.

The hosts ended up adding their second just before the break. It was a serious mistake for Spurs when Eveliina Summanen failed to control a pass from Spencer, allowing Miedema (44 years old) to head in to score the first goal of the game.

Both of Arsenal’s goals came from corners in the second half as Tottenham continued to play a struggling defence. In the 10th minute, Mead made a great move, with Rafaelle Souza (54 years old) moving ahead of two defenders to head into the net.

Miedema hit goal again as Arsenal stunned Spurs with a short corner. Steph Catley passes the ball, the striker beats Spencer in the air to nod home. Leah Williamson could have had one more goal in the fifth minute, but her header sent the ball into the net.

The Gunners were in control the whole time, while Tottenham did not have any notable chances. Most of the effort went to the goal of Manuela Zinsberger, with the Arsenal goalkeeper joining 47,367 fans inside the pitch as a spectator for most of the game.

Arsenal have now won the last 10 WSL matches, scoring 95 goals and conceding only 2. The clean sheet was their eighth in a row – another WSL record.
