PHOENIX – There is a lot of confusion surrounding what is legal in Arizona when it comes to post-abortion Roe v. Wade.

Arizona has had abortion laws since the 1800s, decades before it became a state. A debate surrounding that law has brought the race to the state attorney general in the spotlight.

That law banned abortion with very few exceptions and it was never repealed. But the state also has some newer laws that restrict abortion in different ways. For example, the state legislature this year passed a law banning abortions after 15 weeks of gestation. So the question is, what laws must suppliers follow?

Arizona’s current state attorney general, Republican Mark Brnovich, said the old ban on territorial dates To be effective. But Brnovich is nearing the end of his term, so both sides of the matter now really focus on who will replace him and what AG’s next interpretation of the Arizona law will look like.

On the Republican side, there are six candidates and all have said they plan to enforce state laws that restrict abortion.

On the Democratic side, only one candidate failed to run, who said any restrictions on abortion in Arizona would violate the state constitution, which guarantees a person’s privacy. individual.

Currently, most abortions have stopped in Arizona. Brnovich is seeking to enforce the state’s 19th-century ban. While the matter has stalled in court, Planned Parenthood and other providers are reluctant to take the risk while the law remains unclear. There have been reports of clinics in California receiving large numbers of Arizona patients.
