Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister-designate Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said on Saturday that he thanked the National Assembly and Gandhi’s family for electing him as Chief Minister.

Mr. Sukhu said that he is very happy because despite coming from an ordinary family, he will become the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.

“I am very happy that I will become a CM despite coming from an ordinary family. I thank the Congress party and the Gandhi family for giving me this opportunity. My mother never stopped me from entering politics. . I have achieved this day thanks to her blessing,” Mr. Sukhu said.

Asked about the displeasure of Himachal Pradesh Parliament Speaker Pratibha Singh, the appointed minister said “There is no such displeasure”.

Earlier, Pratibha Singh’s supporters held up slogans demanding that she be appointed Prime Minister.

Mr Sukhu received a warm welcome from his supporters in Shimla on Saturday.

Mr Sukhu, 58, praised Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi after his election and said the party would deliver on its election promises. He said the new government would “bring change”.

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu will be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday.

He is a grassroots politician who has advanced and has extensive organizing experience in the hill state.

A four-time MLA, Sukhu, 58, is a former speaker of the state’s National Assembly and has served as a member of the Youth Congress and NSUI.

He was chairman of the party’s state unit from 2013 to 2019 and spoke his mind even when it didn’t go well with the party’s tall leader Virbhadra Singh, who has served as Prime Minister six times. .

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has advocated for the promotion and training of younger Parliamentary leaders in Himachal Pradesh.

Cheerful and approachable, Mr. Sukhu has a wide network of contacts in the mountainous state thanks to many years of working in the organization.

A loyalist to the Gandhi family, Mr. Sukhu belongs to a middle-class family. He has been active in politics since his student days and participated in elections as an NSUI candidate. He is the president of NSUI and the Indian Youth Congress in the state.

He fought and won the election for Shimla City Corporation. Mr. Sukhu won the first parliamentary election in 2003 from Nadaun.

He will be the second chief minister of Hamirpur district after BJP’s Prem Kumar Dhumal.

Congress has won congressional polls in the state and has 40 seats.
