The Archbishop of Canterbury has called on the government to act to repair the country’s “broken” social care system.

In his New Year’s message, Bishop Justin Welby said nursing homes are “struggling” to deal with rising bills while trying to find and retain the staff they need to stay afloat.

“We know our care system is broken, but it doesn’t have to be. We can be up to the challenge to fix it,” he said.

“That means action from all of us: you, me, family, community, government.”

Mr Welby stressed the importance of ensuring that society values ​​the work of carers.

He said: “Why do care work when you can get better pay in less demanding jobs? Caring work is certainly not easy. Good caregivers are the ones who do. wonderful, worthy of respect.”

His intervention comes as he prepares to publish, with the Archbishop of York, what he describes as an “important report” on social care.

Mr Welby said he hoped the report would offer a “hopeful vision of our society”.

“A place where no one is hindered, looked down upon or considered a burden – where families and unpaid carers also receive support,” he said.

“Taking care of the heart of what it means to be human. It’s hard, but it can also be the most vital thing we’ve ever done. It goes back to that essential lesson: we need each other.”

A government spokesman said ministers had prioritized social care in their statement last autumn, providing up to £7.5 billion in support over the next two years.

“This will enable more people to access high-quality care and help address some of the challenges in the sector – including waiting lists, low fees and pressure,” the spokesperson said. workforce”.

“The government remains committed to reforming adult social care charging and supporting those who need it, which is why we are giving local authorities more time to prepare and provide more funding to help them deal with the immediate pressures.”
