Appleby Wins Flat Coach Championship For The Second Time In A Row

For the second year in a row, Newmarket-based coach Charlie Appleby has been honored by the Horserace Writers and Photographers Association (HWPA) with the Derby Award as champion condo coach of the year 2022.

Appleby, 47, has so far this year been represented by 150 winners and 225 seconds from 478 starts – a 31% win rate – and his runners have made £6,225,397 . Among those wins were 18 European Group winners – three in Group 1 – including a one-two in G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas with Coroebus (Dubawi [Ire]) and Native Trail (oasis dream {GB}), the first win for the harmonizer in the prestigious Classics prize.

The HWPA Awards completes a sweeping sweep of the 2022 jockey, trainer, and owner championships for Godolphin, who in addition to Appleby hires jockey William Buick.

“I am incredibly proud of what I and the team have achieved by supporting the Coach Championship for the second year in a row,” Appleby said. “I am very fortunate to have the team at Moulton Paddocks and Godolphin and I greatly appreciate their dedication.

“Winning QIPCO 2000 Guineas was the highlight. It’s something I’ve personally never done before and have done almost a few times. It’s one of those races that I really want to be in. It was a very proud day.”

Appleby-trained athletes have won three at Royal Ascot as Coroebus (G1 St James’s Palace S.), Naval Crown (Dubawi {Ire}) (G1 Platinum Jubilee S.) and Noble Truth (G1 Platinum Jubilee S.)King {GB}) (G3 Jersey S.). He also won the top coach title at the Qatar Goodwood Festival and closed the gap with the three winners of this year’s Breeders’ Cup World Championship at Keeneland-Silver Knott (GB) (Lope De Vega). {Ire}) (GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf), Naughty Magic (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) (GI Breeders’ Juvenile Field Sprint) and The Romance of rebel (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) (GI Longines Breeders’ Cup).

Appleby accepted his award on Monday night at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.
