Thanks to the recent update, Apple Music Subscribers can now transfer playlists to their YouTube Music profile. This new feature was introduced very quietly, as Apple did not make an announcement through their usual channels. We only learned about the tool after people discovered changes made to one of the Company support documents.

Subscribers will need to meet certain requirements before moving anything. First, you’ll need Apple Music or iTunes compatible registration. Users also need an activity YouTube Music account. Luckily, you don’t need a YouTube Music subscription, so at least migrating playlists won’t be a costly endeavor.

Assuming you have everything in order, Apple recommends you go to Data and Privacy PageSign in to your Apple ID account, then select “Transfer a copy of your data.” On the following screen is the option to move playlists from Apple Music to YouTube Music. As reportedThis process may take some time to complete. And you will receive an email notification when the process is complete.

There are some limitations to be aware of. According to Apple, the only playlists that can be moved are ones that you create yourself. Non-collaboratively curated or shared playlists can’t be moved. Organized folders and music files also can’t be shared. If a song isn’t on YouTube Music, you won’t be able to listen to it. Additionally, non-music audio files like podcasts can’t be moved.

At the time of writing, it looks like you can only move playlists from YouTube Music to Apple Music. A second supporting document claims that this is now possible. First, you’ll need to go to Google Takeout and follow the instructions there to prepare your YouTube Music playlist for transfer. However, if you go to Google Takeout NowThere’s a small notice that says support for Apple Music is “coming soon”. This process isn’t available yet.

It is unknown when the reversal will be rolled out. For now, you will have to use third-party apps like SongShift on iOS to switch playlists.

We applaud Apple for being more welcoming to third-party services. Something like this is a big win for users. They have the freedom to move their favorite tracks to another platform without being forced to redo everything from scratch. Speaking from experience, redoing playlists is a huge pain. It would be even better if Apple Music worked with other platforms like Spotify. Although we doubt that will happen anytime soon. Two brands not the best relationship for many years now.
