Apple introduces a new feature to help reduce motion sickness for iPhone and iPad users

Apple has unveiled a new feature aimed at helping iOS users experiencing motion sickness when using their devices in a moving car. The company explains that motion sickness is caused by a sensory conflict between what a person feels and sees, which often prevents many people from using their smartphone or tablet while traveling.

In a blog post, Apple detailed the “Vehicle Motion Signals” feature. This feature uses floating dots at the edge of the screen to reflect changes in vehicle movement, helping to reduce sensory conflicts without affecting the main content. Leveraging sensors in iPhone and iPad, Vehicle Motion Signal detects when the user is in a moving vehicle and adjusts accordingly. This feature can be activated automatically or toggled on and off in Control Center.

Rollout of Vehicle Motion Signals to all iPads and iPhones is planned for later this year.

Advanced accessibility features

Additionally, Apple announced several features designed for users with disabilities. These include eye tracking, which allows users to navigate app elements and use Dwell Control to trigger functions like physical buttons, swipes, and other gestures using just their eyes.

iOS users will also get voice control, color filters, and sound recognition options in CarPlay. These features enable voice commands and provide notifications of sirens and car alarms to users who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Haptic music for the hearing impaired

Apple also introduced Music Haptic, a feature for deaf users to experience music through haptic feedback. When this feature is enabled, the Taptic Engine in iPhone provides subtle taps, textures, and vibrations that correspond to the sound. Music Haptics will be available on millions of songs in the Apple Music catalog and as an API for developers to integrate into their apps.
