“Anywhere, Anytime” is amazing, the kind of movie that is sure to inspire an affectionate cult later, but don’t wait for that to happen.
Watch this now, immediately. It’s such a special film, sports making, performing, scripting and editing of such caliber feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Michelle Yeoh plays Evelyn, an unhappy and business-minded laundromat owner. Evelyn and her husband, Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) are summoned to a meeting with an IRS inspector played by Jamie Lee Curtis. What I just described is the most “casual” part of the movie, as everything that follows is a quick trip down a rabbit hole.
Written and directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, this is somewhat of a personal, deeply felt depiction of the pain of a dynamic family. This is also a difficult sci-fi story to write as it has to be explained to the cast and crew.
The trailer makes the movie look weird, and since then doesn’t even begin to describe this, one of the craziest pieces ever to be released. The movie is so weird it will prove to be a challenge for some. There are a lot of scenes that seem to have a hand in camp or know kitsch, but the filmmakers haven’t crafted a work that’s stylistically dull.
In fact, while there are plenty of jokes intended for minors, the script will often return to them and invest them with a severity that was initially absent.
Perhaps the only sentence to describe this is, “What if Charlie Kaufman wrote The Matrix?”
That, however, fails to express the energy and (perhaps its most magical aspect) the tone, which amazes with its versatility yet consistency. As a comedy, it encompasses the wacky, the crazy, and the surreal. When it turns dramatic, it stays strong and never gets rough.
Editing is tough, really, and has to be a honing, hands-on experience, like Oliver Stone’s “JFK” cut. There’s a lot of shot here, lots of different story themes happening all at once, and complicated scenes can become a mess in the original scene set.
Not only is this coherent, but it’s easily one of the most exciting movies of all time; this is true even without an action sequence.
Humor is at the level of intellectual goals, getting the basic pleasures and miseries of existence (we say “nothing matters”, this has more than one meaning). means). This is a movie that can’t go ahead. You can’t predict where it will go, even if the character’s motivations are established in the first scene.
Yeoh delivers one of the best performances of the year, investing in real feel and emotional realism, even as the story gets tough and challenges her with demanding demands on her performance. physical.
Catching up with her is Quan, best known for his supporting roles in “The Goonies” and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” What Quan achieves here is very difficult, as he not only plays two roles but invests his heart and hurt in the film’s most enduring character.
Playing Evelyn’s daughter is Stephanie Hsu, who, like Quan, is doing a remarkable job but making it look natural. Curtis excels in a rare character turn and is carried through the typist, playing a layered character that is as difficult to articulate as the roles assigned to her co-stars.
