Antje Rávik Strubel receives the 2021 German Book Prize for his novel “Blaue Frau” (“The Blue Woman”)

The winner of the 2021 German Book Prize is Antje Rávik Strubel for the novel “Blaue Frau” (S. Fischer).

Jury statement:
“With existential force and poetic precision, Antje Rávik Strubel depicts a young girl freed from her memory of being raped. Layer by layer, this unsettling novel exposes what happened. The story of women’s self-empowerment expands into a reflection on competing cultures for memory in Eastern and Western Europe and the power imbalance between the sexes.

In a projected narrative movement, Antje Rávik Strubel has succeeded in giving voice to what is truly indescribable about a traumatic experience. In her dialogue with the mythical character of The Woman in Blue, the narrator summarizes her interventionist poetics: literature as a fragile force against injustice and violence in the face of face despair. “

The members of the jury for the 2021 German Book Prize are: Knut Cordsen (cultural editor, Bayerischer Rundfunk), Bettina Fischer (director Literaturhaus Köln), Anja Johannsen (director Literarisches Zentrum Göttingen), Richard Kämmerlings (literary reporter, Die Welt), Sandra Kegel (head of literature and art, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), Beate Scherzer (bookseller, Proust Wörter + Töne) and Anne-Catherine Simon (part editor) literature and art, Die Presse).

Other novels that have been shortlisted for the award are:
Norbert Gstrein: Der zweite Jakob (Carl Hanser), Monika Helfer: Vati (Carl Hanser), Christian Kracht: Eurotrash (Kiepenheuer & Witsch), Thomas Kunst: Zandschower Klinken (Suhrkamp) and Mithu Sanyal: Identitti (Carl Hanser).

Stiftung Buchkultur und Leseförderung des Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels (Fund for Book Culture and Reading Promotion of the Association of German Booksellers and Publishers) presents the 2021 German Book Prize for the best German-language novel of the year. The Deutsche Bank Stiftung (Deutsche Bank Foundation) is the main sponsor of the German Book Prize, and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Communication and the city of Frankfurt am Main are also partners. The Deutsche Welle television network supports the German Book Awards in its media activities both at home and abroad.
